what is cloud governance?

Cloud governance is the set of policies, ownership rules and checks that keep cloud spending, security and compliance under control as a team runs on AWS, Azure or both. It answers who may do what, who pays, and who fixes a problem when one appears.

What does cloud governance cover?

Cloud governance covers three questions: where the money goes, what is exposed, and whether required controls are in place. Those are the cost, security and compliance streams. Each has its own tools and teams, so governance is the practice of reading them together and giving every issue a clear owner.

The three streams of cloud governance
StreamQuestion it answersTypical signals
CostWhere is spend going, and why did it change?Billing and usage data, tags, budgets
SecurityWhat is exposed or misconfigured?Resource configuration, access settings, alerts
ComplianceAre our controls in place, and can we show it?Configuration state, audit logs, evidence

How is cloud governance different from FinOps and cloud security?

FinOps, cloud security posture management and compliance work are disciplines. Cloud governance is the layer above them: shared rules, shared visibility and named owners. Each discipline can run well on its own, yet a single event often touches all three, which is why governance reads their signals together.

How do you start with cloud governance?

Start small and repeat. Connect your accounts with read-only access, line up billing, configuration and audit signals, rank what you find by severity, and give each finding an owner. Then review outcomes on a regular rhythm. OpsOne calls this method Observe. Link. Prioritize. Resolve.

  1. Observe

Read billing, configuration and audit data across your AWS and Azure accounts without changing anything.

  2. Link

Connect signals that describe the same resource or event, so one cause is not counted three times.

  3. Prioritize

Give each finding a severity so the most serious work comes first.

  4. Resolve

Assign a named owner, agree the fix, and track it to done.
